A rejuvenated Matthew Mitcham has done a backflip, rekindling his love affair with platform diving - the event that brought him Olympic glory. After a difficult London Olympics hampered by an abdominal tear, he vowed to move closer to the pool - the 3m board - to reduce the impact on his body. The 25-year-old didn't make the cut for the 2012 Olympics final when he failed to control his final semi-final dive and dropped from 11th to 13th place. That wasn't good enough for the perfectionist who, in 2008, earned gold. Rio remains a target, but 25-year-old Mitcham wants to go there contesting the spectacular 10m platform.

The Russian men suffered a few unlucky events - and late injuries - at this month's World Championships. I started watching gymnastics in the time of Alexei Nemov, who was a fantastic role model for me. He did everything I enjoyed about the sport: power, strength, poise, originality. Since Nemov, it was a little hard to remain inspired by the Russians. That has just changed. In mid-2011, I found a reinvigorated interest in the men's team when I noticed the talents of David Belyavskiy, Emin Garibov, and Ablyazin. They have a number of the qualities Nemov displayed. They all have different strengths and weaknesses. It also doesn't hurt that they're attractive just like Sexy Alexei was.
